The Buttermilk Bend Trail, perched above the South Yuba River, is a sanctuary for wildflowers. Known for its rich biodiversity, this trail offers a captivating journey through diverse landscapes, from rolling hills to gentle slopes. Every step reveals a new surprise, as the flora transitions and evolves throughout the season. On these guided walks, you’ll witness the beauty of Western Buttercups, Larkspur, Shooting Stars, Tufted Poppies, Narrow Leaf Lupine, Fairy Lanterns, Chinese Houses, Bird’s Eye Gilia, and so much more. The Buttermilk Bend Trail becomes a living canvas, showcasing nature’s artistic prowess.

Our experienced docents will lead you on a leisurely two-hour hike along the Buttermilk Bend Trail, covering approximately 2.5 miles round trip. The trail is accessible to most fitness levels, making it suitable for both novice and seasoned hikers. We recommend wearing sturdy walking shoes, donning a hat, applying sunscreen, and carrying water to stay hydrated along the way. To support the conservation efforts and the preservation of this natural wonder, a suggested donation of $3.00 is greatly appreciated.

Our adventure begins at the trailhead located in the north parking lot, just beyond the concrete bridge spanning the South Yuba River on Pleasant Valley Road. Please note that dogs are not permitted on the guided walks due to the narrow trail and group sizes. To enhance your visit, make sure to allocate additional time to explore the park’s Visitor Center, where you can discover a collection of wildflower books, nature and history displays, and a delightful array of educational and gift items. You won’t want to miss the opportunity to witness the ongoing restoration of the covered bridge and barn, both built in 1862, as well as the beautifully restored 1920s gas station.

The guided Wildflower Walks at Bridgeport take place every Saturday and Sunday at 11:00 a.m., starting from March 7th through May 10th. However, please keep in mind that walks may be canceled in case of rain. If you have any inquiries or wish to gather more information throughout our short wildflower season, you can contact the park at (530) 432-2546 or visit the official website at www.southyubariverstatepark.org.
