Flying to the Sierra Foothills: A Guide to Airports Near Nevada County, California

If you’re planning a trip to the Sierra Foothills in California, there are several airport options to choose from. In addition to major commercial airports like Reno-Tahoe International Airport and Sacramento International Airport, there are also several smaller general aviation airports in the surrounding area that may be more convenient depending on your needs.

When we travel we typically fly out of Sacramento International Airport. Although I always make sure to compare the flight leaving from Reno because I have found some great deals that way. Reno is reliable in the summer for our location and if you book a flight in advance in the winter, you may have trouble getting to Reno making Sacramento a much more reliable option!

The closest large airports to Nevada County:

* Sacramento International Airport (SMF): Located about 75 miles southwest of Grass Valley, Sacramento Airport is a popular choice for visitors who are coming from other parts of California or from farther away and want a bigger airport than some of the smaller options.

* Reno-Tahoe International Airport, located about 70 miles northeast of Grass Valley. While it’s not technically in California, it’s often the most convenient option for visitors coming from farther away, especially those who want to rent a car and explore the area. Reno Airport is served by several major airlines, including Southwest, Delta, and United, and offers non-stop flights to dozens of destinations across the United States.

For those looking for smaller, more local options, there are several general aviation airports in the area that cater to private pilots and smaller aircraft. These include:

* Nevada County Air Park (GOO): Located in Grass Valley, this small general aviation airport primarily serves private pilots and smaller aircraft. While it’s not a practical option for most visitors, it’s an important resource for local pilots and aviation enthusiasts.
* Auburn Municipal Airport (AUN): Located about 25 miles southwest of Grass Valley, Auburn Airport is a good choice for visitors who are coming from other parts of Northern California and have access to private aircraft.
* Blue Canyon-Nyack Airport (BLU): Located about 20 miles east of Colfax, Blue Canyon-Nyack Airport is another general aviation option for visitors coming from other parts of Northern California or from Nevada.
* Nervino Airport (O02): Located about 30 miles north of Nevada City, Nervino Airport is a small general aviation airport that serves private pilots and smaller aircraft.
